Hammerson goes green for World Green Building Week

Find out how Hammerson promoted and joined in the global, annual event that motivates and empowers to deliver greener buildings.
World Green Building Week (WGBW), hosted by the World Green Building Council, is an annual event that ran 24 - 30 September 2018. The week aims to motivate and empower us all to deliver greener buildings. Thus, Hammerson's goal to be Net Positive by 2030 certainly supports the aim of WGBW.
Joining the global movement, the Hammerson Sustainability Team and Marketing Team used WGBW as a springboard to engage colleagues across the business with sustainability issues affecting not only Hammerson, but also their daily lives, through a series of events and campaigns.
Each day of the week had a different focus, aligning with the four key areas of our Net Positive objective. Monday and Tuesday focused on energy and carbon, Wednesday looked at water and biodiversity, Thursday examined socio-economic engagement and Friday was centered on resources.
Throughout the week, a media campaign using #sustainabilitytakeover on Twitter and LinkedIn informed our followers of the day's theme and thesustainable actions being taken across the Hammerson portfolio. Short, informative videos proved especially engaging with our online communities. We also went green quite literally as our logo turned green in honour of the week.
Butterfly Bank, our internal sustainability platform, had it’s time to shine during WGBW. The platform enables employees from Hammerson UK and Ireland to find, take and record actions. Each day we selected 4-8 actions, linked to the day's theme, to promote with an extra 20 butterflies. For example, ‘Have a quicker shower’ earned extra butterflies during Wednesday’s water and biodiversity focus. In just one week, an incredible 1,124 actions were recorded by employees. This is a 40% increase from the average number actions recorded in the previous 6 weeks.
New actions were also posted onto Butterfly Bank as part of the week. The most popular new action was ‘Calculate Your Carbon Footprint’. We encouraged our colleagues to use the WWF Footprint tool and post their carbon footprint to our internal message board as well as pledging how to reduce their emissions. This spurred some very interesting conversations about how much of our carbon footprint is dictated by travel, especially flying!
We hosted a #MeatFreeMonday in the King’s Place canteen. Table talkers in the canteen informed colleagues of the detrimental impacts of meat consumption. Staff enjoyed a tasty vegetable tagine or frittata, showing how easy meat-free can be! Colleagues were able to bank 35 Butterflies on Butterfly Bank, plus an extra 20 Butterflies during WGBW. During the week, 84 people banked their Meat Free Monday meaning a total carbon saving of 525 kg! It just goes to show, every small action can have a big impact.
We had a fantastic week showcasing our sustainability initiatives through our social media takeover and encouraging our own colleagues to take part in WGBW. We look forward to next year!
