With the launch of our new Community Engagement Report, we are celebrating each of the headline achievements featured. Here we introduce some key employment initiatives that helped to create 4885 jobs between 2013 and 2016.
Supporting skills development is a key theme for our community focused commitment to Serve and Invest in our communities. We create jobs both directly within our assets and during the long construction phase of our developments.
Introducing some of our Job Creation Schemes
Employment and Skills Charter for Watermark and Victoria Gate
For both our Leeds Victoria Gateway development and our Watermark Development in Southampton, Employment and Skills Charters have been created and signed.
In Leeds, the charter was created and co-signed by Hammerson, Leeds City Council and Jon Lewis. The Charter set out how we will work with local residents, including young people,
providing access to skills training and 1,000 retail and hospitality job opportunities. A further 1,000 construction employment opportunities were identified as part of the development. All parties involved have worked closely with local colleges, universities, training providers and specialist agencies over the past three years, to ensure that local people can benefit from these opportunities. Opportunities include the Leeds Apprenticeship Scheme.
Hammerson’s development retail director Robin Dobson said:
“We are committed to creating long lasting employment, and training opportunities in Leeds. Signing the Charter marks an important step in the development of Victoria Gate, and highlights the opportunities that the development will create for the local community and further afield.”
Merthyr Tydfil Scheme
Throughout the construction period of the retail park in Wales, Hammerson has successfully worked in partnership with the local council, key contractors including BAM and tenants such as Marks & Spencer to support hundreds of local people into work. To date, over 230 local residents have benefited from gaining access to training and employment opportunities as part of the extension project.
Andrew Berger-North, Director of UK Retail at Hammerson, commented:
“The opening of a full-line Marks & Spencer today, soon to be joined by a bigger, better Next at Merthyr Tydfil, demonstrates our confidence in the local area and represents an important milestone in the extension and reinvigoration of Cyfarthfa Retail Park.
“We have worked hard to make the scheme an easy, convenient and family friendly retail experience for our customers, by providing a greater mix of retailers, best-in-class customer service and plenty of easily accessible car parking spaces, all of which support Merthyr Tydfil’s growing role as a key retail destination. Working in partnership with our contractors and retailers, we were able to unlock significant benefits for the community, providing training and a range of job opportunities for local people, both during construction and in the end retail market.”
Councillor Brendan Toomey, Leader of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, commented:
“This is a fantastic achievement for Merthyr Tydfil after many years of negotiations between the Council, M&S and the Welsh Government. The people of Merthyr Tydfil have been asking for an M&S store to be opened in the area for many, many years and this is a wonderful opportunity for the area and for local employment.”
