7687 Students Engaged
2 Aug 2016
With the launch of our new Community Engagement Report, we are celebrating each of the headline achievements featured. Here we talk about activity at our centres to engage 7687 students between 2013 and 2016.
Hammerson teams have created many different ways to engage students on a range of topics from health and wellbeing, through to enterprise. Every asset in our portfolio has their own approach, and that includes our head office in London.
Urban Plan Workshops, Kings Cross HQ, London
Hammerson is one of the founders of Urban Plan, an initiative being delivered by the Urban Land Institute, a global non-profit education and research institute. Introduced to the company by an employee who saw its merits and felt it could be a good fit for Hammerson’s community ambitions, Urban Plan UK and Hammerson joined forces in 2014.
The initiative delivers targeted, one-day workshops for A-level students studying geography and business studies. The workshops are targeted to bring the built-environment to life by challenging students to plan the redevelopment of a blighted site in a hypothetical town. The main objective of the programme was to create more informed citizens, who better understand the communities in which they live; to enrich the A-levl curriculm and to promote careers in the property and retail industry. Hammerson employees worked alongside professional facilitators to deliver the workshops, touring 15 schools across England and reaching 322 pupils.
“Thank you very much for your help and support in organising UrbanPlan - the students and the department were very complimentary of the project, your ambassadors and the resources sent through. We have even had some students change career plans as a result of Urban Plans input!”

Mentoring Works Programme with Big Alliance
Hammerson partnered with Big Alliance in November 2015 to deliver the Mentoring Works Programme.
30 students from local Islington based school St Aloysius attended sessions held in our offices in Kings Place, where 16 Hammerson mentors kindly give up their time to help the students in areas of interview skills, CV writing, presentation tips and more.
This programme gave Hammerson employees the chance to help students in areas they feel they are struggling in. having had the students visit our offices, it allowed them to visualise what it is like to be in a working environment. Given that the school was in the borough of Islington where our Head office is based in, it’s a great chance for us to invest in our local community and formulate a partnership with the school where we could offer support in other areas outside of mentoring.
“The best thing about mentoring so far has been being able to gain valuable knowledge about what to expect once I leave school.”
