Crystal Palace FC Foundation and Croydon Partnership, the joint venture between Westfield and Hammerson which is set to redevelop Croydon’s retail centre, offered young people in Croydon a unique opportunity to win a place in it's Summer Football Academy.
Boys and girls aged 11 – 16 from across the borough were invited to the Centrale shopping centre on Thursday 17th July between 5.00pm and 8.00pm to put their football skills to the test with a special machine which measured the speed of their shooting.
The five young people to record the fastest shots were awarded a free place on one of the two 6 week courses, which have been specifically created to cater for local young people who might not ordinarily be able to get the opportunity of top flight coaching. Both will include challenging, but very enjoyable, ways to improve fitness, agility, balance and coordination as well as helping to develop key technical skills such as passing, shooting, dribbling and defending.
The course for 11-13 year old's will take place at Oasis Academy, Shirley Park with the slightly more intense course for 14-16 year old's, modeled on the CPFC pre-season training schedule being held at the Archbishop Lanfranc School.
Crystal Palace FC Foundation is liaising with seven schools from across the borough, who have been asked to nominate young people to the Academy.
Donald Forde, Head of Crystal Palace FC Foundation said “We are engaging with a wide range of schools to involve young people who might not ordinarily have the opportunity of top class coaching. We were pleased to be able to offer the five additional places in the Academy through this competition.”
Steve Yewman from the Croydon Partnership said: “With the World Cup just behind us, and the new domestic season round the corner, football fever remains as strong as ever. We issued the open invitation to the young people of Croydon to go down to Centrale and show us what they could do, and the sharpest shooters won themselves a line up alongside some of Crystal Palace’s top coaches this Summer.”
